Lemon

Have you ever heard of a Lemon Battery? Lemon Battery is the term given to a lemon that has become the subject of a school age science experiment in which electrodes are attached to the fruit and then plugged into a light bulb or small engine. The high acid content of the fruit actually generates enough electricity to power whatever it is that has been plugged in. It’s hard to believe but it’s true.

Well, we believe that what we’ve created by blending the all-natural flavor of lemon with the full-bodied and decidedly brisk character of pekoe gunpowder should henceforth be known as a Lemon Tea Battery. Here’s our rationale. Pekoe Gunpowder is one of the stronger flavored green teas on the market and takes your taste buds on a journey of smoky depths with each sip. Its strength and flavor comes from the way it is rolled during production. The labor-intensive process includes hand rolling each individual leaf in order to force flavorful liquids from the centre of the leaf to the surface. Firing seals the leaf in this rolled state and keeps the flavor and power contained. (Small. Round. Contained power. Hmm, starting to sound a lot like a battery!)

Add to this the lively character of fresh lemons. Although lemons are generally known for their soothing qualities, as the school experiment illustrates, they also pack some power. Just think of the way your lips pucker automatically if you suck on a pure lemon.

So there you have it, The Lemon Tea Battery. Pekoe Gunpowder and Lemon – a magical combination. Just try and drink a cup before heading off to bed.

Brewing Tips - Hot Tea: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 teaspoon of tea for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 3-7 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea). Even though milk and a dash of sugar help enhance the flavor character on this tea, it is perfectly acceptable to consume this tea ‘straight-up’

Brewing Tips - Cold Tea: Place 6 teaspoons of tea into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the leaves. Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water]. Please note that this tea may tend to go cloudy or ‘milky’ when poured over ice; a perfectly normal characteristic of some high quality black teas and nothing to worry about!
